St. Croix

St. Croix is truly a hidden gem in the Caribbean.
Part of the US Virgin Islands, but worlds apart from the usual. Just 35 miles south of St. Thomas, St. John and BVIs it is the largest of the USVIs and also the most dramatic. At 84 miles square and highest elevation at Mount Eagle of 1,165ft, St Croix boasts beautiful beaches, rain forests, salt marshes, desert, and plains. But the diversity and beauty doesn’t stop at sea level.

Every winter, Juliet heads to St. Croix to explore this unique, friendly, and enchanting island – both above and below the water. Departing from the Frederiksted Pier, we’ll be exploring the wrecks and reefs of Butler Bay, the walls off Cane Bay, and the reefs and slopes of the northern shores of the island around the Salt River and Christainsted.

March 1:
Arrival in St. Croix

We recommend arriving in St. Croix a day before the Live Aboard trip starts.

This is NOT included in the package.

Itineraries in St. Croix are shifted to Friday boarding days and Thursday disembarkation days to allow for dockage and diving at the Frederiksted Pier during off-cruise ship days and to hopefully give you a better deal on airfare into St. Croix on non-weekend days.

If you would like to extend your diving vacation with some more diving on land after your trip on Juliet, we can recommend some great land-based shops that will take good care of you.

We recommend the following hotels:

March 1-7:

11am Dive Site 2

12:30 Lunch

3pm Dive Site 3*

6pm Dinner

7-9pm Night Dive at Dive Site 3 (timing depends on time of year)*

*on the final dive-day of charter Dive 3 is moved up to 1:30pm and the night dive is skipped.

March 7:
Departure

Today is time to say goodbye (for now).

On Thursday we return to the Pier for disembarkation.

Check out time is 9am on Thursday, at which time we ask that you have all of your belonging out of your cabins to allow us to prepare for the next charter.

If your flight is not until later in the day you are welcome to leave your luggage on board until your departure time while you sight-see in St. Croix. Let the crew know if you need assistance with ground transportation.

Current DAN recommendations can be found below. Always follow your computer’s recommendation and know your personal limitations.

Safe travels home, and we can’t wait to see you on our next trip!

If you would like to extend your diving vacation with some more diving on land after your trip on Juliet, we can recommend some great land-based shops that will take good care of you.

TRAVEL DETAILS

Accommodation

Juliet LOB
March 1-7, 2024

Dive Insurance

Aquatic Adventures of Ohio requires all divers to have some level of dive insurance to travel on all trips. At minimum, you must have hyperbaric recompression chamber coverage- this may be covered by your current insurance, but if not… you’ll need supplemental dive accident insurance.

NOTE: A DAN membership is separate from DAN insurance.

If you don’t have dive insurance yet, check out the link below for plan options.

Proof of dive insurance will be required prior to departure. If no dive insurance has been purchased/proof provided, AAO reserves the right to cancel your reservation without refund.

REGISTRATION FORM

PLEASE TYPE CAREFULLY! INACCURATE INFORMATION WILL RESULT IN TRAVEL DELAYS AND/OR CHANGE FEES.

(Please submit one registration form per person)

important information + waivers

  1. All divers are now required to be nitrox certified as they only fill nitrox on board.

  3. Fill out both the passenger form and the waiver maximum of 2 months prior to departure.

F.A.Q.

Air Travel to St. Croix

Most major US airlines fly into St. Croix Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) from the US. If you cannot find flights directly into St. Croix, look at flights into San Juan or St. Thomas and then catch one of these local airlines the fly into St. Croix 3-5 times per day.

If you are flying in the day of departure (Friday) please be sure to include your airline and flight information on your passenger information form so that the crew knows when you will be arriving. If you are arriving well after boarding time, don’t worry. we plan to stay at the Fredricksted Pier and dive throughout the afternoon and evening so even a flight arriving later in the day is ok. If you would like to plan to fly in the day before, please note that St. Croix is not a huge tourist destination and as such hotels are hard to come by and book up years in advance! Please plan ahead.

On your day of return, disembarkation is at 9am. To allow for ample no-fly-time we recommend booking flights that depart after noon to avoid having to cut your diving short on the day before return. Current DAN recommendations can be found here. Always follow your computer’s recommendation and know your personal limitations.

If your flight or check-in time is not until later in the afternoon, you are welcome to leave your luggage on board Juliet while you explore St. Croix until your time of departure. We can help arrange for tour vans and transportation.

How to get to the Juliet LOB

The boat is located at the Frederiksted Cruise Ship Pier, at the north end of Strand Street in Downtown Frederiksted, St. Croix. Taxi from the airport should be around $12-16 per person depending on luggage.

What if I need a roommate?

If you would like to have a roommate but don't not have one identified yet, then we will initially only charge the double occupancy rate. Aquatic Adventures Ohio will work to find you a roommate; however, if a roommate cannot be found then you are responsible for paying the single occupancy rate.

Diving

St. Croix features some excellent wreck diving in addition to jaw-dropping walls. Butler Bay is only a short distance from the Pier and offers shallow tugs and barges teaming with life, as well as deeper wrecks including the wreckage of the old cruise ship pier - aptly named Armageddon. Sharks, octopus, rays, and eels are abundant, as well as plenty of macro life.

The visibility is typically endless – great for photographers! Cane Bay has miles of dramatic walls and beautiful reefs, ranging in depths from 30’ to well beyond recreational dive limits so you can choose what depth you are comfortable diving. The diving here is great for beginners as well as the more seasoned underwater adventurers. Typically, there is no current and boat traffic is negligible.

are meals INCLUDED?

Yes!

All meals and beverages on board are included.

are GRATUITIES included?

No, these are not included yet. Across the liveaboard industry in the US and Caribbean, tips are not included in the price of the trip. A suggested gratuity of 10-15% is greatly appreciated.

Do I have to be certified to go SCUBA diving?

Yes, an Open Water Certification is required to go SCUBA diving.

If you haven’t gotten certified yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!
You can do your classroom work before your trip and then do your checkout dives on vacation!

Can I go diving just a few times? Or do I have to dive every day?

The first rule of diving (well, one of the first rules) is to call a dive if you aren’t comfortable. This means that if you have signed up to go diving one day and you don’t feel comfortable, please don’t get in the water.
That said, this is a personal choice and not one that will result in a refund of money.

is the use of reef-safe sunscreen required?

It is not required, but it is strongly recommend to use of reef-friendly sunscreens to help keep the ocean’s corals healthy. Research estimates that 4-6,000 metric tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers into the ocean annually, and most of these sunscreens contain ingredients that cause harmful algae blooms and coral bleaching. Please check your sunscreens and avoid those that contain benzophenon/oxybenzone. To do your part, use biodegradablenatural sunscreens to help protect the reefs.

Look for sunscreens that have active ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

What are the water temps in St. Croix in March?

Water temperatures in the Virgin Islands stay fairly stable throughout the year.

A 3mm “shorty” wetsuit is recommended except for rainy days and multiple diving a 3mm "full wetsuit" would be better.

(Let us know in advance, Aquatic Adventures can assist you with a rental or purchase of a new wetsuit!)

What dive gear is included?

  • Tanks

  • Weights

  • Weight belts

  • Fishing and spearfishing equipment

  • Nitrox

Is Nitrox available?

Yes!

On this trip a Nitrox certification is required, as they only have Nitrox on board of the Juliet LOB.

can i dive with gloves/knives?

Yes, but remember gloves are for the mooring line only, not to protect your hands to touch the coral. Juliet LOB adheres to a strict no touch/no take policy on all of their trips and destinations, with the exception of garbage, and lionfish. Take only pictures, leave only bubbles, kill only time and lionfish.

Are sheets / towels / soaps provided?

Yes, Juliet LOB provides all linens, shower and deck towels, and there are shampoos, and soaps in all of the shower areas. If you like something specific feel free to bring it with you.

Is there internet access or cell phone reception on board?

There is no internet or wifi on board while you are out on charter. Juliet LOB has a dedicated satellite email system but no ability to browse the internet or check personal email accounts. When within site of land in the Bahamas, VIs, and Puerto Rico your US phone will most likely work, but please check with your provider for fee schedules and roaming charged that might be incurred.

In case of an emergency: On the boat, in addition to a VHF radio, Juliet LOB has a satellite phone and e-mail. Passengers can use these for ship to shore communication. There is a fee for non-emergency use. Your family and friends at home should contact Juliet Sailing and Diving at 1-866-5JULIET (558-5438) and they will contact the boat.

How does someone get in touch with me on board in case of an emergency?

If you would like to leave contact information with your loved ones should they need to reach you in an emergency they can contact the office at 1-866-558-5438 to get a message to the boat. There is also satellite email on board that can accept text-only messages of 500 characters or less at juliet@mazu.email

Are there outlets in my cabin?

Yes, there are normal household 110v outlets throughout the boat, in all cabins and the main salon for you to use. And yes, there are some near the beds if you need to use a CPAP at night. If you need an extension cord just ask the crew when you board.

Can I fish onboard?

Yes, we strongly encourage lionfish hunting as they are invasive – and very tasty. Other fishing is allowed but we’d honestly rather you hunt the lionfish instead. Better to take the fish that aren’t supposed to be there and give the endemic fish a break!
