F.A.Q.
What are the Synagogues in Italy that I should consider visiting?
VENICE
Jewish Community of Venice
WORSHIP ACCESS
Services rotate between synagogues depending on the community
More limited and less predictable
Contact Details
Address: Cannaregio 1189, 30121 Venice
Phone: +39 041 715012
Email: segreteria@jvenice.org
What They Expect
Services rotate so you MUST coordinate ahead
Passport required
Limited seating (some synagogues are very small)
NOTE
You MUST contact the community in advance
You may need to coordinate timing/location of the service
Venice is the least “walk-in friendly” for worship. If you just show up, there’s a real chance you won’t get in.
FLORENCE
Great Synagogue of Florence
WORSHIP ACCESS
Services do happen (especially Shabbat and holidays)
This synagogue has a smaller, local community feeling
Contact Details
Address: Via Luigi Carlo Farini 6, 50121 Florence
Phone: +39 055 2989879
Email (visitor/general): firenzebraica@operalaboratori.com
Alt Email: sinagoga.firenze@coopculture.it
What They Expect
They explicitly request contact info submitted in advance (about a week ahead) for services
Passport required
Smaller community so a heads-up really helps
NOTE
Contact ahead of time is strongly recommended
They may ask basic questions (nothing intense—just confirming intent)
Florence is welcoming, but it’s not a drop-in-and-blend-in situation. A quick email beforehand makes everything smoother.
ROME
Great Synagogue of Rome
WORSHIP ACCESS:
Regular, well-attended services (largest Jewish community in Italy)
Multiple minyanim depending on day/time
Contact Details
Address: Largo Stefano Gaj Taché, 00186 Rome
Main Phone: +39 06 6840061
Email (best): info@romaebraica.it
Alt Email (museum/entry): info@museoebraico.roma.it
What They Expect
You may need security clearance for Shabbat/holidays
Passport required
Advance notice is strongly recommended
NOTE
Email ahead (ideally 3–7 days in advance)
Brief intro: who you are, that you’re Jewish, when you want to attend
You don’t need proof of Judaism—but clarity helps
Plan around Shabbat & holidays
Services will allow you access for worshiping
Regular tourist hours will not allow for worship access
Dress and behave appropriately
Standard synagogue etiquette (kippah, modest attire, etc.)
Arrive early—security can take time
Rome is your best bet for a full, traditional service experience, but also the strictest security environment.
Do I need to arrange anything in advance to attend worship services at synagogues in Rome, Florence, or Venice?
Short answer: Yes—while you don’t need formal documentation in advance, you should contact the synagogue ahead of time.
What to expect:
Synagogues in Rome, Florence, and Venice are active religious spaces with controlled access and security screening
Services (especially Shabbat) are open to visitors, but not typically “walk-in” friendly, especially in Venice and Rome
Communities may require advance notice for security clearance
What you should do:
Email the synagogue 3–7 days in advance
Introduce yourself and request to attend a specific service (e.g., Friday night or Shabbat morning)
Bring a passport (required for entry)
Arrive early to allow time for security
Information you may be asked for:
Full name
Travel dates
Nationality
Desired service time
(Sometimes) date of birth or passport details
Important notes:
You do not need proof of being Jewish or a letter from a rabbi
Security is present and taken seriously—this is normal
Venice requires the most coordination; Rome has the strictest security; Florence is the most flexible
Example email:
Subject: Visiting and Attending Services
Dear [Synagogue / Jewish Community Name],
Hello, my name is [FULL NAME], and I will be visiting [CITY] from [DATES].
I am Jewish and would love the opportunity to attend services while I am in the area. I am hoping to attend [Friday night / Shabbat morning / specific date].
Please let me know if this is possible and if you need any additional information from me in advance.
Thank you very much for your time, and I appreciate your consideration.
Warm regards,
[FULL NAME]
[PHONE NUMBER]
NOTE: If they need more info (passport, DOB, etc.), they’ll ask you. Also, sending a long, detailed email upfront can actually slow things down, so keep the email short and sweet.
Do I need to book in advance to visit synagogues as a tourist?
Short answer: Usually yes—especially in Rome and Venice. We can assist you with this if you like, or provide you the information if you prefer to manage this communication on your own.
How it works:
Synagogue visits are typically managed through Jewish museums or official tour programs, not direct walk-in entry
Access to interiors is often only available via guided tours
By city:
Rome: Entry to the synagogue is only via guided tour through the Jewish Museum
Venice: Guided tours are required to enter the historic synagogues in the Jewish Ghetto
Florence: More flexible—you can visit via the Jewish Museum, with optional guided tours or independent entry
What you should do:
Book online or email ahead (recommended for Rome and Venice)
Bring a passport or ID
Plan around closures (no visits on Saturdays or Jewish holidays)
What to expect:
Security screening at entry
Timed or scheduled access
Smaller group sizes in some locations (especially Venice)
NOTE:
Tour visits are well-organized and accessible—but a little advance planning ensures you won’t miss out, particularly in Venice and Rome.
What is the Jewish Community of Venice?
The Jewish Community of Venice (Comunità Ebraica di Venezia) represents one of Europe’s oldest continuous Jewish populations, centered in the historic Venetian Ghetto. Established in 1516, the area became the first legally segregated Jewish quarter, now a vital cultural and religious landmark featuring historic synagogues and museums.
Key facts
Founded: 1516 (Ghetto established by decree)
Location: Cannaregio district, Venice, Italy
Synagogues: Five historic 16th-century synagogues
Museum: Jewish Museum of Venice
Community status: Active Jewish congregation and heritage site
Historical background
The Venetian Ghetto was established when the Republic of Venice confined Jewish residents to a small island area in Cannaregio. Despite restrictions, it became a flourishing hub of scholarship, trade, and printing, producing significant contributions to Jewish thought. The word “ghetto” itself originated here, derived from the Venetian “geto,” meaning foundry.
The Ghetto hosts five synagogues—each linked to distinct ethnic groups within the Jewish diaspora: the German (Scuola Grande Tedesca), Italian (Scuola Italiana), Levantine (Scuola Levantina), Spanish (Scuola Spagnola), and Canton (Scuola Canton). These ornate interiors, often hidden within plain exteriors, exemplify Venetian Baroque design adapted to limited space and religious modesty.
Cultural and religious life
Today, the Jewish Community of Venice maintains religious services, cultural programs, and educational initiatives. The Jewish Museum of Venice showcases Judaic art, ritual objects, and documents narrating centuries of Venetian Jewish history. Kosher restaurants, a yeshiva, and community events continue to serve local and visiting Jews.
Modern significance
The Venetian Ghetto is both a living community and a memorial to European Jewish endurance. It attracts global visitors for its preserved synagogues, Holocaust memorials, and annual cultural festivals, symbolizing the intersection of Jewish heritage and Venetian history.
Tell me more about the Great Synagogue of Florence
The Great Synagogue of Florence, also known as the Tempio Maggiore Israelitico, is one of the largest and most architecturally distinctive synagogues in Europe. Completed in 1882, it stands as a centerpiece of Florence’s Jewish community and a landmark of Moorish Revival design.
Key facts
Location: Via Luigi Carlo Farini, Florence, Italy
Completed: 1882
Architectural style: Moorish Revival
Architects: Mariano Falcini, Vincenzo Micheli, Marco Treves
Religious affiliation: Judaism (Orthodox)
Architecture and design
The synagogue’s design merges Islamic, Byzantine, and Italian architectural influences. Its twin towers and large central copper dome—originally covered in green oxidized bronze—make it a recognizable feature on the Florence skyline. The interior is richly decorated with geometric and floral motifs in polychrome stone, intricate mosaics, and ornate stained glass, emphasizing continuity with Middle Eastern traditions.
Historical background
Construction began in 1874 during a period of Jewish emancipation following Italian unification. The synagogue symbolized newfound civic equality and the community’s integration into Florentine society. Architect Marco Treves, himself Jewish, designed it to reflect both local heritage and the broader identity of Italian Jewry.
Wartime damage and restoration
During World War II, the synagogue was used as a storehouse by German troops, who attempted to destroy it in 1944. Local partisans and Allied forces helped prevent complete demolition. Postwar restorations repaired extensive damage, and later efforts in the late 20th century restored original decorative elements and structural stability.
Cultural and religious role
Today, the Great Synagogue remains an active place of worship and community life. It also houses a Jewish museum featuring artifacts and exhibits on Jewish history in Florence and Tuscany. The site attracts visitors for both its religious significance and its artistic and architectural value.
More information on the Great Synagogue of Rome
The Great Synagogue of Rome (Tempio Maggiore di Roma) is the principal Jewish house of worship in the Italian capital and among Europe’s largest synagogues. Completed in 1904, it symbolizes both the emancipation and enduring presence of Rome’s Jewish community, which has existed for over two millennia.
Key facts
Location: Lungotevere de’ Cenci, Rome, Italy
Architects: Vincenzo Costa and Osvaldo Armanni
Inaugurated: 1904
Architectural style: Eclectic with Art Nouveau and Assyrian-Babylonian motifs
Functions: Synagogue, Jewish Museum of Rome, cultural center
Origins and construction
Following Jewish emancipation after the 1870 unification of Italy, the community replaced the demolished Ghetto’s five small synagogues (“Cinque Scole”) with one monumental temple on the same site. Architects Vincenzo Costa and Osvaldo Armanni won a public competition, designing a structure that fused classical Roman proportions with Near Eastern ornamentation. The square-based aluminum dome—unique among Rome’s domes—makes the building instantly recognizable from afar.
Architecture and interior
The synagogue’s plan forms a Greek cross beneath its segmented dome. Art Nouveau decoration blends with Jewish iconography in vivid mosaics, frescoes, and stained glass. The central bimah (pulpit) and aron ha-kodesh (Torah ark) are richly carved and gilded, while women’s galleries line three sides of the hall. Marble furnishings from the old Ghetto synagogues were incorporated, preserving centuries-old craftsmanship.
Historical significance
The Tempio Maggiore stands as a symbol of resilience. During the Nazi raid of October 16 1943, over a thousand Roman Jews were deported to Auschwitz; memorials within the complex honor their memory. The synagogue also witnessed milestones of interfaith reconciliation, notably the visits of Popes John Paul II in 1986 and Benedict XVI in 2010, which strengthened Catholic-Jewish dialogue.
Present role and visiting
Today, the Great Synagogue remains the seat of the Chief Rabbi of Rome and a hub for Jewish cultural life. The Jewish Museum of Rome, located in its basement, exhibits artifacts spanning antiquity to modern times. Guided visits operate Sunday – Thursday, typically 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with modest dress and security screening required. Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
Do I need to validate my train ticket before boarding my train?
Short answer: NO.
High-Speed Trains (What you’ll likely be on)
Examples:
Trenitalia (Frecciarossa / Frecciargento)
Italo
Routes:
Venice → Florence
Florence → Rome
What you do:
DO NOT check in at a station machine
Just:
Show up at the station
Go to your platform
Board the train
Your ticket:
Already includes:
Train number
Departure time
Seat assignment
NOTE: Your printed ticket (or phone) is your “boarding pass”
Onboard:
A conductor will scan your ticket after departure
(NOT APPLICABLE TO YOUR ITINERARY:)
Regional Trains ARE where validation matters
If you were on slower trains (not your routes, but good to know):
Paper ticket?
MUST validate it in a small machine before boarding
(Little green/white stamp machines in stations)
Digital ticket?
Must “check in” online before departure (Trenitalia requires this now)
THIS is where If you don’t validate you can get fined
For YOUR trips specifically
Venice → Florence
Florence → Rome
You will be on:
Frecciarossa (high-speed train)
So your process is:
Arrive ~20 minutes early
Check departure board for platform (“binario”)
Walk to platform
Board the correct car
Sit in assigned seat
That’s it. No check-in. No validation.
Common mistakes (avoid these)
❌ Trying to “validate” a high-speed ticket (not needed)
❌ Waiting in line at ticket counters (waste of time)
❌ Boarding wrong train (check train number, not just destination)
❌ Getting on wrong carriage (your seat is specific)
Pro tip (this matters more than check-in)
In Italy:
Platforms are sometimes posted 10–15 minutes before departure
Trains are long, so know your car number so you don’t sprint last minute
Venice Water Taxi Information
The best way to get from the Venice Marco Polo airport to Venice is by water taxi as it gives you a panoramic view of the city as you arrive. However, it can be expensive. A shared water bus is also an option. The quickest way is by land taxi but it will not go directly to your hotel. The video below gives an overview of how to get to Venice from the airport.
SHOULD I TIP THE GUIDE AND DRIVER?
Yes!
Your guides will be working hard for you all week, so showing a little gratitude in the way of gratuity is appropriate.
Consider a tip of about €10-20/pp/day that you tour with the guide.
This is NOT mandatory, but it is kind and it is appreciated.
As for the drivers- we suggest a tip of €5/pp/day (+ €2/bag is an appropriate tip).
Euro is the accepted currency
Italy is part of the European Union and uses the Euro. This is easily available at your local bank, usually at zero or minimal cost. You can also exchange it at the airport, but you will pay a much higher fee to exchange from US dollar to euro. If exchanging at your bank, make sure to start the process at least 3 weeks before you leave to make sure there are no issues.
Electrical converter and adapter
You will an electrical converter. Italy uses 230 volts while the US uses 120. You phone charger will not work there without a specific adaptor. In addition, any other electrical devices will need an adaptor as while. It is important, that when plugging in a device such as a laptop, that a quality power CONVERTER, not adaptor is used. Adaptors will work on devices like cellphones, not laptops.
Is the bread free?
Often, when dining out in Italy, the waiters will bring you bread when you sit down at your table. This is not free and will be added to your bill if you partake from it. If you do not want it, it best to say no thank you and have them remove it.
Neither is the water
You will be asked if you want bottled water, sparking or still/calm. There is a nominal charge for this (2-3 euros) per bottle. Usually, one bottle is enough for your meal.
IS the water safe to drink?
Absolutely. The tap water is safe to drink in Italy. And Rome has over 2,500 drinking water fountains, known as nasoni. These fountains provide free, fresh (sourced from springs and aqueducts) drinking water and are a significant part of the city’s infrastructure and culture.
beware of pickpockets and scams
Leave your important documents in the hotel safe and only take cash when you need it. If must carry them, make sure your wallets, passports, and important documents are kept secured in a pouch or purse, slung across your body and not over your shoulder. Zippers should be kept closed and turned inward towards your body if possible and fold your arms across it. If possible, purchase a slash-resistant purse or pouch. Always be aware of your surroundings. Never, EVER, use your back pocket to carry anything, including your cellphone. Use your front pockets.
Also, never interact with anyone selling anything on the street. Do not take anything handed to you. If you do, they will immediately ask for payment. Often, if you are eating outside on a patio, they might place the object on the table in front of you. Do not touch and immediately say “No. No thank you” and ignore them. If they continue to bother you, call your waiter.
cash versus cards
Credit cards are accepted at most places but one should carry small amounts of cash for tips and for taxis. Visa is the most accepted card in Europe while American Express is less so. If your current card doesn’t support international use or charges transaction or currency conversion fees, consider getting a new card specifically for foreign travel that doesn’t charge such fees.
What should I when visiting Cathedrals, Basilicas and other religious sites?
Cover Shoulders and Knees: Both men and women should ensure their shoulders and knees are covered. Avoid wearing sleeveless tops, tank tops, shorts, or skirts above the knee. A lightweight scarf or shawl can be handy to drape over your shoulders if needed.
Avoid Revealing Clothing: Steer clear of low-cut tops, crop tops, or clothing that is too tight or sheer.
Comfortable Footwear: While there are no strict rules about footwear, comfortable shoes are recommended as you may need to walk or stand for extended periods.
Hats and Headwear: Hats should be removed before entering religious sites as a sign of respect.
Seasonal Adjustments: In summer, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that still provide coverage, such as linen or cotton. In cooler months, layering is a good option to stay warm while adhering to the dress code.
By dressing modestly and respectfully, you’ll not only ensure entry to these sacred spaces but also show appreciation for their cultural and religious significance.
When can i take pictures?
Most places allow pictures to be taken, both inside and outside but may vary from location to location. Always check with the guide or local authority to see if it is allowed, especially within cathedrals and churches. While it is generally allowed to take pictures of the plaster casts of the Pompeii victims, but it’s important to do so respectfully. These casts are not just historical artifacts; they represent the tragic loss of life during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Are meals INCLUDED?
Included:
Breakfast is included daily at all of your hotels.
Food during your Venice and Florence food tours.
NOT included:

Can I pay by Zelle?
Yes!
We found this to be a fastest, easiest, and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).
Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go into your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.
Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.
Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.
The Pros for using Zelle:
It is FREE (no processing fees)!
It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)
The Cons for using Zelle:
Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.
It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.
Can I pay by check?
Yes!
If you would like to avoid the 4%processing fees, you may pay by check.
It is very important that you pay in advance of the deadlines and allow ample time for delivery.
Payments received after the deadline could result in cancelation of your reservation or increased fees.
There are two ways to pay by check:
Mail the check
Deposit directly at a local branch
