Here, you’ll visit an Andean Catholic church, stroll through narrow cobbled streets, and see locals dressed in traditional attire. You’ll also enjoy a fascinating demonstration of how alpaca wool is washed and dyed using native plants and minerals—a true cultural experience.

Next, journey to Moray, an incredible archaeological site where the Incas conducted agricultural experiments. You’ll learn how they ingeniously adapted plants to thrive at different altitudes using these impressive circular terraces.

From there, you and your guide will head to the remarkable salt mines of Maras. These ancient salt pans, fed by a natural saline spring, have been in use since Pre-Incan times and still operate using traditional methods. The sight of thousands of glistening salt pools is truly unforgettable.

Afterward, you’ll visit the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary, a heartwarming stop where you’ll meet rescued Andean wildlife, including majestic condors, playful llamas, and even pumas. This sanctuary is dedicated to the care and conservation of these animals, offering a unique opportunity to learn about Peru’s native species up close.

Note: The Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary, established in 2007, is a private organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals that have suffered abuse or fallen victim to the illegal wildlife trade. Over the years, they have become a safe haven for a diverse range of species, many of which are critically endangered. Their mission is to help these animals heal and, whenever possible, support the reproduction of endangered species—like the majestic Andean condor—so their offspring can be released back into their natural habitats.

The final stop today is the captivating town of Ollantaytambo, a living Incan city that retains its original urban layout. Wander its narrow streets, admire the flowing streams, and soak in the history of this fascinating place.

After a day filled with culture, history, and breathtaking scenery, we’ll return to Cuzco, leaving you with memories of the Sacred Valley’s wonders.

IS IT BETTER TO USE CASH OR CARD IN Peru and Argentina?

When traveling in Peru and Argentina, it’s best to use a mix of cash and cards, as both have their advantages depending on the situation. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Peru

  • Cash: Cash is widely used, especially in smaller towns, markets, and for tipping or paying for local transportation (like taxis). Peruvian soles are the primary currency, though US dollars are often accepted in tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry small denominations, as vendors may not have change for larger bills.

  • Card: Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger stores in cities like Lima and Cusco. However, smaller businesses and markets may not accept cards, so always have some cash on hand. Be aware that some places may charge a fee for card payments.

Argentina

  • Cash: Cash is king in Argentina, especially with the "blue dollar" exchange rate. Exchanging US dollars for Argentine pesos at unofficial exchange houses (known as "cuevas") or through trusted sources can give you a much better rate than using ATMs or paying by card. Many smaller businesses, taxis, and markets only accept cash, so it’s essential to carry pesos.

  • Card: Credit and debit cards are accepted in most urban areas, hotels, and larger establishments. However, due to high transaction fees and less favorable exchange rates, using cards may not always be the most cost-effective option. Some places may also add a surcharge for card payments.

Tips for Both Countries

  1. ATMs: Use ATMs sparingly, as they often have high withdrawal fees, especially in Argentina. If you do use them, withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees.

  2. Currency Exchange: In Peru, exchange money at banks or authorized exchange offices for the best rates. In Argentina, consider using the "blue dollar" market for better value but ensure you do so through trusted sources.

  3. Small Bills: Always carry small denominations, as vendors in both countries may struggle to provide change for larger bills.

  4. Notify Your Bank: Let your bank know about your travel plans to avoid issues with card transactions.

  5. Safety: Be cautious when carrying cash. Use a money belt or keep it in a secure place, and avoid flashing large amounts in public.

In summary, carry a mix of cash and cards, but lean more on cash in Argentina for better exchange rates and flexibility, while in Peru, cards are more widely accepted in urban areas but cash is essential for smaller transactions.

SHOULD I EXCHANGE MONEY BEFORE I TRAVEL TO South America?

Exchanging money before traveling to South America can be helpful, but it depends on your destination and travel plans. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

When to Exchange Money Before Traveling

  • For Convenience Upon Arrival: It’s a good idea to exchange a small amount of money (enough for transportation, tips, or snacks) before you leave, especially if you’re arriving late at night or in a smaller city where currency exchange options may be limited.

  • To Avoid Airport Exchange Rates: Airport exchange counters often have poor rates and high fees. Having some local currency in hand can help you avoid this.

  • If Your Bank Offers Good Rates: Some banks or currency exchange services in your home country may offer competitive rates with low fees. Check with your bank to see if this is an option.

When to Wait Until You Arrive

  • Better Rates Locally: In many South American countries, you’ll often get better exchange rates at local banks, authorized exchange offices, or even ATMs. This is especially true in Peru, where exchanging US dollars for Peruvian soles is straightforward and widely available.

  • Argentina’s "Blue Dollar" Rate: In Argentina, it’s better to bring US dollars in cash and exchange them locally at unofficial "blue dollar" exchange houses (cuevas) or through trusted sources. This gives you a much better rate than exchanging money at banks or using ATMs.

Tips for Exchanging Money

  1. Bring US Dollars or Euros: These are the most widely accepted foreign currencies in South America and are easy to exchange.

  2. Use ATMs Wisely: ATMs can be a convenient way to get local currency, but watch out for high fees, especially in Argentina. Withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees.

  3. Avoid Large Bills: If you bring cash, carry smaller denominations of US dollars, as some places may not accept larger bills or may not have change.

  4. Research Local Exchange Options: In some countries, like Peru, authorized exchange offices (casas de cambio) offer good rates. In Argentina, the "blue dollar" market is the best option for exchanging cash.

  5. Check Your Bank’s Policies: Some banks offer fee-free international withdrawals or competitive exchange rates, so it’s worth checking before you travel.

Bottom Line

Exchange a small amount of money before you travel for immediate expenses, but plan to exchange the majority of your money once you arrive for better rates. If you’re traveling to Argentina, bring US dollars in cash to take advantage of the "blue dollar" exchange rate. Always research the best options for your specific destination to maximize your budget!

banks and credit unions

If you need cash while you’re traveling, we recommend drawing some from an ATM once you've arrived in the foreign country.
Keep in mind, unless you’re using a prepaid multi-currency card like Revolut or a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, you could incur currency exchange fees.

WHAT IS THE TIPPING ETIQUETTE IN Peru and Argentina?

Tipping etiquette in Cusco and Buenos Aires varies slightly, but in both cities, tipping is appreciated and often expected in certain situations. Here’s a guide to help you navigate tipping in each destination:

Tipping in Cusco, Peru

Tipping is not mandatory in Peru, but it is a common way to show appreciation for good service. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Restaurants:

    • In mid-range and upscale restaurants, a 10% tipis customary if service is not already included in the bill (check for "servicio" on the receipt).

    • In casual or local eateries, tipping is less common, but leaving a few soles as a gesture of appreciation is always welcome.

  • Tour Guides and Porters:

    • For tour guides, tipping 10-20 soles per person per day is standard, depending on the quality of the service.

    • If you’re trekking (e.g., the Inca Trail), porters and cooks typically receive 50-100 soles per person for the entire trek, distributed among the group.

  • Taxis:

    • Tipping taxi drivers is not expected, but rounding up the fare to the nearest sol is a nice gesture.

  • Hotels:

    • Bellhops: 2-5 soles per bag.

    • Housekeeping: 5 soles per night left in the room.

  • Street Performers or Musicians:

    • If you enjoy their performance, a small tip of 1-2 soles is appreciated.

Tipping in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Tipping is more common in Buenos Aires, but it’s still not obligatory. Here’s what you should know:

  • Restaurants:

    • A 10% tip is customary in restaurants, even if service is included in the bill. Leave cash on the table, as tips are often not added to credit card payments.

    • In casual cafes or bars, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is appreciated.

  • Tour Guides:

    • For guided tours, tipping 10-20% of the tour cost is standard, depending on the quality of the experience.

    • For free walking tours, a tip of $10-20 USD per person is common, depending on the length and quality of the tour.

  • Taxis:

    • Tipping taxi drivers is not expected, but rounding up the fare to the nearest peso is a polite gesture.

  • Hotels:

    • Bellhops: 100-200 ARS per bag.

    • Housekeeping: 200-300 ARS per night, left in the room.

  • Street Performers or Musicians:

    • If you enjoy their performance, tipping 100-200 ARS is a kind gesture.

General Tips for Both Cities

  1. Carry Small Bills: Always have small denominations of local currency (soles in Cusco, pesos in Buenos Aires) for tipping.

  2. Cash is Preferred: Tips are usually given in cash, even if you pay for the service by card.

  3. Show Appreciation: Tipping is a way to show gratitude for good service, so adjust the amount based on the quality of your experience.

In summary, tipping is appreciated in both Cusco and Buenos Aires, with 10% at restaurants being a common standard. For tour guides, porters, and hotel staff, tipping generously is a great way to acknowledge their hard work and enhance your travel experience!

Do I need to acclimate to the altitude in Cusco?

Yes, Cusco sits at an altitude of 11,152 feet (3,399 meters), so altitude sickness is common. It’s recommended to spend at least 1-2 days acclimatingbefore engaging in strenuous activities. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and try coca tea or altitude sickness medication if needed.

Is it safe to drink the water in Cusco and Buenos Aires?

No, it is not safe to drink tap water in either Cusco or Buenos Aires. Here’s why and what you can do to stay hydrated safely:

Cusco

  • Tap Water: The tap water in Cusco is not safe for drinking due to potential contamination and the lack of proper filtration. Even locals typically boil their water before consuming it.

  • What to Do:

    • Drink bottled water, which is widely available and affordable.

    • Use a water filter or purification tablets if you’re traveling to remote areas or want to reduce plastic waste.

    • Avoid ice in drinks unless you’re sure it’s made from purified water.

    • Brush your teeth with bottled or boiled water to be extra cautious.

Buenos Aires

  • Tap Water: The tap water in Buenos Aires is technically treated and safe for drinking in most areas. However, many locals and travelers prefer bottled water due to the taste and occasional issues with old pipes in certain neighborhoods.

  • What to Do:

    • If you’re comfortable, you can drink tap water in Buenos Aires, especially in well-maintained areas. However, if you’re unsure, stick to bottled water.

    • Use bottled water for brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach or are concerned about water quality in older buildings.

General Tips for Both Cities

  1. Bottled Water: Always check that the seal on bottled water is intact before purchasing.

  2. Reusable Bottles: Consider using a reusable water bottle with a built-in filter to save money and reduce plastic waste.

  3. Boiling Water: If you’re staying in one place for a while, boiling tap water for at least 1 minute is a safe and cost-effective option.

  4. Avoid Ice: Unless you’re certain it’s made from purified water, avoid ice in drinks, especially in Cusco.

In summary, while tap water in Buenos Aires is generally safe but not always preferred, it’s best to avoid drinking tap water in Cusco altogether. Stick to bottled or filtered water in both cities to stay safe and hydrated during your trip!

Is it safe to walk around Cusco and Buenos Aires at night?

Walking around at night in Cusco and Buenos Aires can be safe in certain areas, but it’s important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. Here’s a breakdown for each city:

Cusco

  • Safe Areas at Night: The historic center of Cusco, including the Plaza de Armas and nearby streets, is generally safe at night due to the presence of tourists and police patrols. Many restaurants, bars, and shops in this area stay open late, making it lively and well-lit.

  • Areas to Avoid: Avoid walking alone in poorly lit or less touristy areas, especially in the outskirts of the city or quiet residential neighborhoods. Stick to main streets and avoid shortcuts through alleys or isolated areas.

  • Tips for Safety:

    • Travel in groups if possible.

    • Use a trusted taxi or rideshare app (like InDriver or Uber) if you’re heading back to your accommodation late at night.

    • Keep valuables out of sight and avoid flashing expensive items like jewelry or electronics.

Buenos Aires

  • Safe Areas at Night: Popular neighborhoods like Palermo, Recoleta, and Puerto Madero are generally safe for walking at night, as they are well-lit and frequented by locals and tourists. These areas have a vibrant nightlife with plenty of restaurants and bars.

  • Areas to Avoid: Be cautious in neighborhoods like La Boca, San Telmo, or Retiro at night, as they can be less safe after dark. While these areas are popular during the day, they tend to be quieter and less secure at night.

  • Tips for Safety:

    • Stick to busy, well-lit streets and avoid wandering into unfamiliar or deserted areas.

    • Use a taxi or rideshare app (like Cabify or Uber) for transportation at night, especially if you’re traveling alone or to less central areas.

    • Be mindful of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas or near ATMs.

General Safety Tips for Both Cities

  1. Plan Ahead: Know your route and destination before heading out at night.

  2. Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like looking at your phone while walking.

  3. Limit Valuables: Carry only what you need and leave passports, large amounts of cash, and expensive items in a secure place at your accommodation.

  4. Trust Your Instincts: If an area feels unsafe or deserted, leave immediately and find a safer route or transportation.

  5. Use Reputable Transportation: Avoid hailing taxis off the street; instead, use trusted apps or ask your hotel to arrange transportation.

In summary, both Cusco and Buenos Aires have areas that are safe to explore at night, but it’s important to stick to well-lit, busy areas and take precautions to ensure your safety. When in doubt, opt for a taxi or rideshare to get around after dark.

CAN I PAY BY ZELLE?

Yes!

We started taking Zelle payments last month and we found this to be a fast and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).

Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go in to your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.

Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.

Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.

The Pros for using Zelle:

  • It is FREE (no processing fees)!

  • It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)

The Cons for using Zelle:

  • Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.

  • It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.

CAN I PAY BY CHECK?

Yes!

If you would like to avoid the 4% credit card processing fees, you may pay by check.
It is very important that you pay in advance of the deadlines and allow ample time for delivery.

Payments received after the deadline could result in cancelation of your reservation or increased fees.

There are two ways to pay by check:

  • Mail the check

  • Deposit directly at a local branch
