F.A.Q.
Will there be any festivals or special events during our visit?
Yes! One of the most exciting aspects of this trip is that your visit coincides with El Salvador's famous Fiestas Agostinas (August Festivals), the country's largest annual celebration. Held each year from August 1–6 in honor of Divino Salvador del Mundo (The Divine Savior of the World), the patron saint of El Salvador, the festivities feature parades, cultural performances, religious traditions, food vendors, music, amusement rides, and community celebrations throughout San Salvador.
Because you'll be traveling from August 4–9, you'll have the opportunity to experience part of this unique cultural celebration firsthand. While some businesses and government offices may operate on modified schedules during the holiday period, the festival atmosphere creates an exciting and memorable backdrop for your arrival in the country. Depending on local schedules and timing, we may even be able to incorporate some of the festivities into your sightseeing experience.
Is El Salvador safe for families?
Yes. El Salvador has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years and is now one of the safest countries in Central America for tourism. Throughout your trip, you'll be accompanied by trusted local partners and guides who know the destinations well. As with travel anywhere in the world, common-sense precautions are always encouraged.
Who will be our guide in El Salvador? Is he qualified?
Absolutely. Throughout your journey in El Salvador, you'll be accompanied by Alfredo Alvarado, one of the country's most highly trained, experienced, and credentialed professional tour guides. With more than 19 years of guiding experience, Alfredo specializes in El Salvador's history, archaeology, volcanoes, hiking, cultural tourism, and off-the-beaten-path experiences. His passion for sharing his homeland, combined with his professionalism and extensive training, has earned him a reputation as one of El Salvador's premier guides.
Some of Alfredo's professional qualifications include:

Beyond his impressive résumé, what truly sets Alfredo apart is his enthusiasm for sharing his country with visitors. He is passionate about creating authentic experiences while ensuring every guest feels safe, informed, and welcomed. Whether you're hiking a volcano, exploring ancient Maya sites, wandering colorful villages, or learning about Salvadoran culture, you'll be in the hands of one of the most respected and accomplished guides in El Salvador.
What is the weather like in August?
August falls within El Salvador's green season. Expect warm temperatures throughout the trip, generally ranging from the mid-70s to upper-80s°F. Afternoon rain showers are common, particularly in the mountains, but they are often brief and help create the country's lush landscapes and waterfalls.
What should we pack?
We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, hiking shoes with good traction, a swimsuit, rain jacket or poncho, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. A small backpack is also helpful for day tours and hikes.
Why is it called the “Albania Adventure Park” if it is in El Salvador?
This is one of those fun travel stories where the answer is actually a little unclear.
The attraction is officially called Café Albania, and the adventure park grew out of the original café and coffee farm near Apaneca along the Route of Flowers. Most sources describe it as a coffee plantation that gradually expanded into an adventure park with the Rainbow Slide, bicycle zipline, surf zipline, maze, giant swings, and other attractions.
As for why it's called "Albania," there doesn't appear to be an official published explanation from the owners. Local guides and travelers have offered a few theories over the years:
It may simply be the name chosen by the founders for the original café and coffee farm.
Some speculate it was inspired by the mountainous scenery of the European country of Albania, since the property sits in the cool, green highlands around Apaneca.
Others believe it may have been a personal or family name connection.
We've never found a definitive explanation from the owners themselves, and none of the major tourism sites or guidebooks seem to provide one. What is well documented is that Café Albania started as a café and maze attraction before evolving into the adventure park it is today.
For now, we will simply describe it as:
A unique mountaintop attraction in the heart of El Salvador's Route of Flowers, known for its famous Rainbow Slide, bicycle and surf ziplines, giant swings, maze, and spectacular views of the surrounding coffee-growing mountains.
That's really what makes it memorable—not the name, but the fact that it feels like someone took a beautiful coffee plantation and turned it into an adventure playground in the clouds.
How physically active is this trip?
This is an active itinerary designed for adventurous families. Activities include walking tours, hiking, waterfall visits, archaeological sites, and a volcano hike. Most activities are suitable for families with children who enjoy being outdoors and active. The Santa Ana Volcano hike is the most physically demanding activity of the trip.
How difficult is the Santa Ana Volcano hike?
The hike is considered moderate. The trail is approximately 4.5 miles round-trip and gains elevation steadily throughout the climb. Most active travelers and older children can comfortably complete the hike. The reward is one of the most spectacular volcanic crater views in Central America.
What currency is used in El Salvador?
The official currency of El Salvador is the U.S. Dollar, making travel especially convenient for American visitors. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, though carrying some cash for small purchases and local vendors is recommended.
Will we need to exchange money?
No. El Salvador uses U.S. Dollars as its official currency.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa?
At the time of travel, U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits to El Salvador. A valid passport is required and should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Travelers should always verify entry requirements before departure.
What kind of food can we expect?
Salvadoran cuisine is flavorful, approachable, and family-friendly. You'll have opportunities to try local favorites such as pupusas, yuca frita, tamales, fresh tropical fruits, seafood, grilled meats, and locally grown coffee. International dining options are also available throughout the trip.
Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?
In most cases, yes. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions, allergies, or food preferences in advance so accommodations can be arranged whenever possible.
Is the water safe to drink?
We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water throughout the trip. Bottled water will be readily available during your travels.
Will there be Wi-Fi and cell service?
Most hotels, restaurants, and many attractions offer Wi-Fi. Cell service is generally reliable in cities and populated areas, though service may be limited in remote mountain or rural regions.
Is this trip suitable for children?
Absolutely. This itinerary was specifically designed with adventurous families in mind. The combination of volcanoes, waterfalls, beaches, archaeological sites, cultural experiences, wildlife, food, and hands-on activities creates an engaging experience for travelers of all ages.
What makes El Salvador unique?
El Salvador offers an incredible diversity of experiences within a relatively small geographic area. In a single week, you can hike volcanoes, explore ancient Maya sites, visit colorful mountain villages, relax on Pacific beaches, discover world-class coffee regions, and learn about a country undergoing one of the most remarkable transformations in the Americas.
Why visit El Salvador now?
El Salvador remains one of the most authentic destinations in Latin America. Tourism is growing rapidly, yet many areas still feel undiscovered compared to neighboring countries. Travelers have the opportunity to experience the country's natural beauty, culture, and hospitality before it becomes a mainstream destination.
Can I pay by Zelle?
Yes!
We found this to be a fastest, easiest, and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).
Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go into your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.
Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.
Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.
The Pros for using Zelle:
It is FREE (no processing fees)!
It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)
The Cons for using Zelle:
Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.
It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.
Can I pay by check?
Yes!
If you would like to avoid the 4%processing fees, you may pay by check.
It is very important that you pay in advance of the deadlines and allow ample time for delivery.
Payments received after the deadline could result in cancelation of your reservation or increased fees.
There are two ways to pay by check:
Mail the check
Deposit directly at a local branch
