It's the perfect introduction to the culture, history, and warm hospitality that you'll experience throughout your journey.
No visit to El Salvador would be complete without trying its national dish, so your next stop is the famous pupusa district of Olocuilta, a community renowned throughout the country for its authentic pupuserías and its role in creating the world's largest pupusa. Here you'll enjoy a tasting of freshly handmade pupusas prepared just as generations of Salvadoran families have enjoyed them.
Later, you'll savor a traditional Salvadoran dinner (at your own expense) featuring regional specialties before continuing to your beachfront hotel at San Blas in La Libertad.
As you arrive along the Pacific Coast, you'll settle in for the evening and prepare for an unforgettable week of volcanoes, waterfalls, beaches, adventure, and cultural discovery.
Over the next several days, La Libertad will serve as your home base for exploring the very best of El Salvador. Known for its stunning Pacific coastline, world-famous surf culture, dramatic volcanic-sand beaches, and spectacular sunsets,
La Libertad offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Staying at Nativo Hotel San Blas places you just steps from the ocean while providing convenient access to waterfalls, volcanoes, mountain villages, archaeological treasures, and countless outdoor adventures.
As the sound of the waves drifts through the evening air, you'll quickly understand why so many visitors fall in love with this beautiful stretch of coastline.

August 6:
Santa Ana Volcano, Lake Coatepeque & Hot Springs
6:30am: Departure from hotel (w/a stop for breakfast along the way)
9:00am - 12:30pm: Santa Ana volcano hike
1:00pm - 2:00pm: Lunch overlooking Coatepeque Lake.
3:00pm - 4:30pm: Hot springs in Caluco, Sonsonate
6:30pm*: Estimated return to hotel
Begin the day with an early departure from your hotel, stopping along the way for breakfast before continuing into El Salvador's volcanic highlands.
Your main adventure of the morning is a guided hike to the summit of Santa Ana Volcano, the highest volcano in the country. As you climb through changing landscapes, your guide will share insight into the volcanic forces that have shaped El Salvador's geography and fertile countryside. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views and the volcano's famous turquoise crater lake.
After descending the volcano, relax over lunch (at your own expense) at a scenic restaurant overlooking beautiful Lake Coatepeque. Formed within an ancient volcanic caldera, the lake is surrounded by steep green mountains and offers one of the country's most impressive landscapes. After the morning's hike, it's the perfect setting to enjoy a leisurely meal, take in the views, and celebrate the day's accomplishment.
The day ends with a well-earned visit to the hot springs in Caluco, where you'll have time to soak, swim, and relax in naturally warm thermal waters surrounded by tropical scenery. After a challenging volcano hike and a full day exploring El Salvador's volcanic landscapes, the hot springs provide a relaxing finish before returning to your hotel on the Pacific Coast.
Although this region is famous for its coffee plantations, we've intentionally omitted the coffee tour from this itinerary. August falls outside the harvest season, and many of the processing facilities and equipment are not in operation. By focusing instead on the area's most memorable experiences, you'll make better use of your time while still returning to your hotel earlier in the evening to relax and enjoy the beautiful Pacific Coast.
Please Note: The estimated return time to your hotel is approximate and may vary. Factors such as traffic, weather conditions, the pace of the hikes, and the amount of time spent enjoying each stop can all affect the day's schedule. The return time shown is based on average travel times and typical time spent at each activity, but your guide will adjust the day as needed to ensure the experience feels enjoyable rather than rushed.
August 7:
Beach Day
After a long day hiking the volcano, and exploring mountain villages, today is yours to enjoy at your own pace.
Spend the day relaxing at your beach hotel or make your way to nearby San Blas Beach, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the region. Whether you prefer lounging by the pool, reading beneath a palm tree, playing in the waves with the kids, or taking a leisurely walk along the shore, this free day provides the perfect opportunity to slow down and soak in the beauty of El Salvador's Pacific Coast.
For those who simply want to unwind, the beach offers a peaceful setting to reflect on the incredible experiences of the week while enjoying spectacular ocean views and warm tropical weather. Watch local surfers ride the waves, enjoy fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, or spend the afternoon swimming and making memories with family before your journey home.
If you're not quite ready for the adventure to end, there are also opportunities to add even more excitement to your itinerary.

August 8:
"The Pompeii of the Americas" and
Tamanique Waterfalls
8:30am: Departure from hotel
9:45am - 11:00am: Joya de Cerén ("The Pompeii of the Americas")
12:00pm: Stop for lunch (at your own expense)
2:00pm - 4:00pm: Tamanique waterfalls hike.
5:00pm*: Estimated return to hotel
Today you'll step back nearly 1,500 years as you explore two of El Salvador's most important archaeological sites. Your first stop is Joya de Cerén, often referred to as "The Pompeii of the Americas." Preserved beneath layers of volcanic ash after an eruption around A.D. 600, this UNESCO World Heritage Site provides an extraordinary glimpse into the daily lives of ordinary Maya families.
Unlike many archaeological sites that focus on kings and temples, Joya de Cerén reveals how farmers, artisans, and families lived, worked, cooked, and worshipped. Walking through the preserved village offers a fascinating and highly relatable educational experience for both adults and children, bringing ancient history to life in a uniquely personal way.
Later, you'll head to the nearby Tamanique Waterfalls, one of the most beautiful natural attractions along the coast. Accompanied by a local guide, you'll hike through rural landscapes and tropical forest trails to reach a series of cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear natural pools hidden within the canyon. Once there, you'll have time to swim, relax, and cool off beneath the falls while surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.
The remainder of the evening is yours to enjoy at the beach. Return to the coast to relax in the warm Pacific waters, stroll along the shoreline, watch surfers ride the waves, or simply unwind along the coast.
*Please Note: The estimated return time to your hotel is approximate and may vary.

Enjoy time for lunch at your own expense before exploring the town on foot, discovering its vibrant murals, artisan shops, local cafés, and lively streets. F.A.Q.
Will there be any festivals or special events during our visit?
Yes! One of the most exciting aspects of this trip is that your visit coincides with El Salvador's famous Fiestas Agostinas (August Festivals), the country's largest annual celebration. Held each year from August 1–6 in honor of Divino Salvador del Mundo (The Divine Savior of the World), the patron saint of El Salvador, the festivities feature parades, cultural performances, religious traditions, food vendors, music, amusement rides, and community celebrations throughout San Salvador.
Because you'll be traveling from August 4–9, you'll have the opportunity to experience part of this unique cultural celebration firsthand. While some businesses and government offices may operate on modified schedules during the holiday period, the festival atmosphere creates an exciting and memorable backdrop for your arrival in the country. Depending on local schedules and timing, we may even be able to incorporate some of the festivities into your sightseeing experience.
Is El Salvador safe for families?
Yes. El Salvador has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years and is now one of the safest countries in Central America for tourism. Throughout your trip, you'll be accompanied by trusted local partners and guides who know the destinations well. As with travel anywhere in the world, common-sense precautions are always encouraged.
What is the weather like in August?
August falls within El Salvador's green season. Expect warm temperatures throughout the trip, generally ranging from the mid-70s to upper-80s°F. Afternoon rain showers are common, particularly in the mountains, but they are often brief and help create the country's lush landscapes and waterfalls.
What should we pack?
We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, hiking shoes with good traction, a swimsuit, rain jacket or poncho, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. A small backpack is also helpful for day tours and hikes.
Why is it called the “Albania Adventure Park” if it is in El Salvador?
This is one of those fun travel stories where the answer is actually a little unclear.
The attraction is officially called Café Albania, and the adventure park grew out of the original café and coffee farm near Apaneca along the Route of Flowers. Most sources describe it as a coffee plantation that gradually expanded into an adventure park with the Rainbow Slide, bicycle zipline, surf zipline, maze, giant swings, and other attractions.
As for why it's called "Albania," there doesn't appear to be an official published explanation from the owners. Local guides and travelers have offered a few theories over the years:
It may simply be the name chosen by the founders for the original café and coffee farm.
Some speculate it was inspired by the mountainous scenery of the European country of Albania, since the property sits in the cool, green highlands around Apaneca.
Others believe it may have been a personal or family name connection.
We've never found a definitive explanation from the owners themselves, and none of the major tourism sites or guidebooks seem to provide one. What is well documented is that Café Albania started as a café and maze attraction before evolving into the adventure park it is today.
For now, we will simply describe it as:
A unique mountaintop attraction in the heart of El Salvador's Route of Flowers, known for its famous Rainbow Slide, bicycle and surf ziplines, giant swings, maze, and spectacular views of the surrounding coffee-growing mountains.
That's really what makes it memorable—not the name, but the fact that it feels like someone took a beautiful coffee plantation and turned it into an adventure playground in the clouds.
How physically active is this trip?
This is an active itinerary designed for adventurous families. Activities include walking tours, hiking, waterfall visits, archaeological sites, and a volcano hike. Most activities are suitable for families with children who enjoy being outdoors and active. The Santa Ana Volcano hike is the most physically demanding activity of the trip.
How difficult is the Santa Ana Volcano hike?
The hike is considered moderate. The trail is approximately 4.5 miles round-trip and gains elevation steadily throughout the climb. Most active travelers and older children can comfortably complete the hike. The reward is one of the most spectacular volcanic crater views in Central America.
What currency is used in El Salvador?
The official currency of El Salvador is the U.S. Dollar, making travel especially convenient for American visitors. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, though carrying some cash for small purchases and local vendors is recommended.
Will we need to exchange money?
No. El Salvador uses U.S. Dollars as its official currency.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa?
At the time of travel, U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits to El Salvador. A valid passport is required and should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Travelers should always verify entry requirements before departure.
What kind of food can we expect?
Salvadoran cuisine is flavorful, approachable, and family-friendly. You'll have opportunities to try local favorites such as pupusas, yuca frita, tamales, fresh tropical fruits, seafood, grilled meats, and locally grown coffee. International dining options are also available throughout the trip.
Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?
In most cases, yes. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions, allergies, or food preferences in advance so accommodations can be arranged whenever possible.
Is the water safe to drink?
We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water throughout the trip. Bottled water will be readily available during your travels.
Will there be Wi-Fi and cell service?
Most hotels, restaurants, and many attractions offer Wi-Fi. Cell service is generally reliable in cities and populated areas, though service may be limited in remote mountain or rural regions.
Is this trip suitable for children?
Absolutely. This itinerary was specifically designed with adventurous families in mind. The combination of volcanoes, waterfalls, beaches, archaeological sites, cultural experiences, wildlife, food, and hands-on activities creates an engaging experience for travelers of all ages.
What makes El Salvador unique?
El Salvador offers an incredible diversity of experiences within a relatively small geographic area. In a single week, you can hike volcanoes, explore ancient Maya sites, visit colorful mountain villages, relax on Pacific beaches, discover world-class coffee regions, and learn about a country undergoing one of the most remarkable transformations in the Americas.
Why visit El Salvador now?
El Salvador remains one of the most authentic destinations in Latin America. Tourism is growing rapidly, yet many areas still feel undiscovered compared to neighboring countries. Travelers have the opportunity to experience the country's natural beauty, culture, and hospitality before it becomes a mainstream destination.
