WHAT CURRENCY IS USED IN ITALY, AND SHOULD I CARRY CASH?

Italy uses the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, shops, and major attractions, but it’s still a good idea to carry a small amount of cash for cafés, small purchases, public restrooms, markets, and tips. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards, and using an ATM connected to a bank is generally preferable to standalone tourist-area currency machines.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR WHEN VISITING CHURCHES AND RELIGIOUS SITES?

Many churches and religious sites require visitors to dress respectfully. As a general rule, shoulders and knees should be covered, and hats should be removed when entering churches. During the warmer months, we recommend carrying a lightweight scarf or wrap and avoiding very short shorts or revealing clothing on days that include religious sites.

IS THE TAP WATER SAFE TO DRINK?

Yes, tap water is generally safe to drink throughout Italy. Bringing a reusable water bottle is a great idea, particularly during the warmer months.

HOW DOES TIPPING WORK IN ITALY?

Tipping is appreciated but is not expected at the same level as it is in the United States. Restaurants may include a coperto, or cover charge, but this is not technically a tip. For good service, rounding up the bill or leaving approximately 5–10% is appreciated. Tipping private guides and drivers is customary for excellent service, with the amount based on the length and quality of the experience.

WHAT KIND OF ELECTRICAL ADAPTER DO I NEED?

Italy uses Type C, F, and L outlets and operates on 230V electricity. Most modern phones, laptops, tablets, and camera chargers are dual-voltage and only require a plug adapter. Hair dryers, curling irons, and other high-powered appliances may require a voltage converter unless they are specifically marked as dual-voltage. Check the label on the device before plugging it in.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO AVOID PICKPOCKETS?

Pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist areas and on public transportation. Keep phones and wallets out of back pockets, use a secure crossbody or zippered bag, and stay especially aware in train stations, on crowded buses and metros, and near major attractions. Avoid placing phones or wallets on café tables where they can be easily grabbed.

WHY IS BREAD PLACED ON THE TABLE AT RESTAURANTS, AND IS IT FREE?

Not usually.
Some restaurants in Italy may bring bread, snacks, or small appetizers to the table when you are seated, but you should not assume that these items are complimentary. If you do not want them, politely ask your server to remove them from the table. If you keep the food and eat any of it, you may be charged for it on your bill.

This is different from the coperto (cover charge).
Many restaurants charge a small coperto, or cover charge, per person, which may include bread and table service. This charge should be listed on the menu and is separate from a tip.

Fun Note: Unlike in the United States, bread is generally not intended to be eaten with olive oil and balsamic vinegar before the meal. Italians typically use bread alongside the meal or for fare la scarpetta—using a piece of bread to enjoy the remaining sauce on the plate.

WHY IS MY RESTAURANT BILL DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I’M USED TO IN THE UNITED STATES?

Dining in Italy works a little differently. You may see a coperto, or cover charge, listed on the bill for each person. This is normal and is not a tip. Water is also generally not complimentary—you will usually be asked whether you prefer naturale (still) or frizzante (sparkling) bottled water.

Meals also tend to move at a slower pace. Servers generally will not bring the check until you ask for it by saying “Il conto, per favore.” This is not poor service; allowing guests to enjoy the table without being rushed is part of Italian dining culture.

CAN I ORDER A CAPPUCCINO AFTER LUNCH OR DINNER?

You certainly can, but Italians traditionally drink cappuccino and other milk-heavy coffee drinks in the morning, often with breakfast. After lunch or dinner, an espresso or caffè is much more typical. No one is going to stop you from ordering a cappuccino in the afternoon, but if you want to follow local customs, save it for breakfast and order an espresso after your meal.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN ITALY IN September?

September is generally a wonderful time to visit Italy, with warm days, cooler evenings, and fewer extremes than during the height of summer. In Naples, Pompeii, Matera, Bari, and southern Italy, daytime temperatures in late September typically reach the mid-70s to low 80s°F, while evenings are usually in the 60s°F. Conditions are often sunny, although brief rain showers or thunderstorms are possible.

In Biella and northern Italy, expect slightly cooler temperatures, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Daytime highs are generally in the upper 60s to mid-70s°F, with nighttime temperatures in the 50s°F. Pack lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen, along with a light jacket, sweater, and compact umbrella. Layers will be especially helpful as temperatures can vary throughout the day.

IS AIR CONDITIONING COMMON IN ITALY?

Yes, but it may not feel as powerful as air conditioning in the United States. Hotels, restaurants, museums, and shops often have air conditioning, but temperatures may be kept warmer than American travelers are accustomed to. Historic buildings can also take longer to cool, and some hotels use energy-saving systems that turn off the air conditioning when guests leave the room.

When can i take pictures?

Most places allow pictures to be taken, both inside and outside but may vary from location to location. Always check with the guide or local authority to see if it is allowed, especially within cathedrals and churches. While it is generally allowed to take pictures of the plaster casts of the Pompeii victims, but it’s important to do so respectfully. These casts are not just historical artifacts; they represent the tragic loss of life during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Can I pay by Zelle?

Yes!

We found this to be a fastest, easiest, and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).

Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go into your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.

Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.

Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.

The Pros for using Zelle:

• It is FREE (no processing fees)!

• It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)

The Cons for using Zelle:

• Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.

• It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.
