Together, they reveal a destination full of contrast, warmth, and lasting discovery
The journey begins in the Azores, where lush volcanic landscapes rise from the Atlantic in shades of deep green and blue. Crater lakes shimmer beneath rolling hills, while hydrangeas line quiet roads and brighten the island scenery with soft bursts of color. The air feels fresh, calm, and restorative, inviting slow walks, scenic viewpoints, and moments of pure stillness. Peaceful yet unforgettable, the Azores offer a serene island escape and a beautiful first chapter in a wider Portuguese adventure.
The Algarve region with its golden cliffs framing sandy beaches and turquoise Atlantic waters sparkling under the southern sun. Charming coastal towns invite easy strolls through whitewashed lanes, harbor front cafés, and open-air terraces where fresh seafood tastes even better beside the sea. From quiet coves to sweeping shores, the region moves at a relaxed, sun-filled pace that feels both luxurious and unhurried. It is a warm and beautiful finale to a Portuguese adventure rich in island wonder, city culture, and coastal beauty.
Porto brings a soulful cultural rhythmic end to the journey, set along the Douro River where colorful facades rise above the waterfront in warm, sunlit layers. Its tiled streets lead to historic churches, lively squares, and quiet corners filled with old-world charm. Across the river, centuries-old wine cellars invite travelers to taste the traditions that shaped the city’s identity. July 5th:
Scuba and Snorkel
8:00am: Pickup for Scuba/Snorkeling
9:00am - 12:00pm: Scuba and Snorkeling tour
This morning, you'll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the marina for an unforgettable snorkeling and scuba diving adventure in the crystal-clear waters surrounding São Miguel.
Certified divers will embark on a two-tank morning dive, exploring multiple underwater sites known for their dramatic volcanic landscapes and abundant marine life. At the same time, snorkelers will head into the water to experience the island's vibrant coastal ecosystem from the surface. While the snorkeling portion may conclude before the scuba divers return from their second dive, both groups will have the opportunity to experience the incredible beauty of the Azores' Atlantic waters.
Beneath the surface, dramatic lava rock formations, underwater arches, and rugged volcanic reefs create a stunning seascape teeming with life. Schools of colorful fish dart through the clear blue water while rays, groupers, barracuda, and other marine species may make an appearance. Whether you're snorkeling just below the surface or diving deeper into the Atlantic's hidden wonders, this experience offers the perfect blend of adventure, tranquility, and natural beauty. Surrounded by the raw energy of the ocean and the volcanic origins of the islands, you'll gain a whole new appreciation for the extraordinary landscapes of the Azores—both above and below the water.
Important Diving Notice: Because you will be participating in scuba diving this morning, it is recommended that you avoid elevations above 1,000 feet (305 meters) for the following 24 hours. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience, we have intentionally left the remainder of your day unscheduled, allowing you to relax and enjoy one of São Miguel's beautiful beaches, waterfront cafés, or low-elevation coastal areas.
Please keep this elevation restriction in mind if arranging any independent activities or transportation. Many of São Miguel's most famous viewpoints, volcanic craters, and mountain roads exceed 1,000 feet above sea level. Before booking taxis, tours, rental cars, or excursions, be sure to verify that your route and destination remain below the recommended altitude limit following your dive.
July 6:
Tour of São Miguel
12pm - 8pm: Tour São Miguel and Furnas
This afternoon, you'll embark on a private adventure into the heart of São Miguel to experience three of the island's most remarkable natural treasures.
After lunch, your guide will take you to one of São Miguel's most breathtaking natural treasures—Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake). This protected volcanic landscape for a scenic hike through lush native vegetation and dramatic mountain terrain. As you make your way along the trail, you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the crystal-clear lake nestled within an ancient volcanic crater, widely considered one of the most beautiful and unspoiled locations in the Azores.
Following your hike, the excitement continues with a canyoning experience through one of the island's pristine river canyons. Accompanied by your experienced guide and equipped with all necessary safety gear, you'll descend waterfalls, navigate crystal-clear streams, and explore volcanic rock formations sculpted by centuries of flowing water. This thrilling activity combines adventure, nature, and unforgettable scenery into one incredible experience.
To conclude the day, you'll visit the geothermal wonderland of Furnas. Famous for its steaming fumaroles, bubbling hot springs, and volcanic activity, Furnas offers a fascinating glimpse into the geological forces that continue to shape the Azores. Stroll among the geothermal features, take in the unique sights and aromas of this volcanic valley, and enjoy a relaxing end to a day filled with adventure, natural beauty, and some of São Miguel's most iconic landscapes.

Upon arrival, a private transfer will take you directly to the beautiful Pestana Vintage Porto Hotel, perfectly situated on the iconic Ribeira waterfront. If your room is not yet ready, the hotel will securely store your luggage, allowing you to begin exploring the city right away.

Step outside and you'll find yourself in the heart of the historic Ribeira district, surrounded by colorful buildings, lively cafés, and stunning views of the famous Dom Luís I Bridge spanning the Douro River. Just across the water lie the renowned Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, while the nearby funicular provides easy access to Porto's upper city, where elegant shopping streets, historic landmarks, and panoramic viewpoints await. Porto's walkable streets, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere make it a city that's easy to fall in love with.

Pestana Vintage Porto
Pestana Vintage Porto stands at the heart of the city's most storied address — Praça da Ribeira, where 18 UNESCO World Heritage buildings have been woven together into a single, seamless hotel. The setting feels both extraordinary and deeply earned, with the Douro River stretching out below, the Port wine cellars of Gaia on the opposite bank, and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge framing the view. Inside, the vintage-contemporary atmosphere strikes a balance that feels both elegant and effortlessly livable. Rib Porto draws guests in with its curated selection of DOP meats and Portuguese wines, while the Rib Bar serves artisan cocktails in a Speakeasy-style setting. The Heritage Bar adds a quieter note, with Port wine and river views from a terrace that earns its place as a favorite spot to end the evening. Beyond the hotel, the Douro awaits — river cruises depart from the docks directly in front, and Porto's most celebrated streets, towers, and wine cellars are all within easy reach on foot.

Traveling through winding mountain roads and picturesque villages, your private tour begins with a visit to the iconic Mateus Palace and Gardens. Famous for its elegant Baroque architecture and beautifully manicured grounds, Mateus offers a glimpse into Portugal's aristocratic past while providing one of the most photographed settings in the country.
Continuing deeper into the valley, you'll visit Quinta Fonte do Milho, a boutique wine estate where you'll learn about the region's unique terroir and the traditions that have shaped Douro wines for generations. From there, you'll board a boat for a relaxing cruise along the Douro River. As you glide through the valley, you'll be surrounded by steep vineyard-covered hillsides, charming wine estates, and some of the most spectacular landscapes in all of Portugal. The river perspective offers an entirely different appreciation for the scale and beauty of this remarkable region.
Your afternoon includes approximately two hours in the charming village of Pinhão, often considered the jewel of the Douro Valley. Here, you'll have time to relax and enjoy regional food and drinks while soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of this riverside town.

F.A.Q.
Euro is the accepted currency
Portugal is part of the European Union and uses the Euro. This is easily available at your local bank, usually at zero or minimal cost. You can also exchange it at the airport, but you will pay a much higher fee to exchange from US dollar to euro. If exchanging at your bank, make sure to start the process at least 3 weeks before you leave to make sure there are no issues.
cash versus cards
Credit cards are accepted at most places but one should carry small amounts of cash for tips and for taxis. Visa is the most accepted card in Europe while American Express is less so. If your current card doesn’t support international use or charges transaction or currency conversion fees, consider getting a new card specifically for foreign travel that doesn’t charge such fees.
CAN i DRINK THE WATER IN THE aZORES AND PORTUGAL?
Yes, you can absolutely drink tap water in the Azores and in Portugal. The islands adhere to strict EU regulations, and the water is rigorously tested, clean, and safe for consumption straight from the tap. The water on the mainland also meets stringent EU drinking water standards and consistently ranks among the highest in Europe for quality and safety.
can i flush the toilet paper?
Yes and no. In most parts of the Azores, you should not flush toilet paper. Because the islands have smaller pipes and older, fragile plumbing systems, toilet paper can easily cause clogs. Instead, you should place used toilet paper in the small waste bin provided next to the toilet. However, you can generally flush toilet paper in mainland Portugal, but not always. Modern buildings and urban areas have plumbing systems that handle it. However, in older buildings, historic city centers (like parts of Porto), and some rural homes with sensitive septic systems, the plumbing cannot handle paper. If there is a small trash can with a lid next to the toilet, it is a clear sign you should dispose of used toilet paper in the bin rather than flushing it.
What travel adapter should I use?
You will need a Type C or Type F plug adapter. While most modern electronics (like phones and laptops) are dual-voltage, you will only need the adapter. However, if you bring your own hair dryer, you will need a voltage converter. Do not attempt to run a US hair dryer on the adapter alone. You will burn out the appliance and possibly cause damage or harm.
Water is not served automatically and nor is it free
You will be asked if you want bottled water, sparking or still/calm. There is a nominal charge for this (2-3 euros) per bottle. Usually, one bottle is enough for your meal.
Can I pay by Zelle?
Yes!
We found this to be a fastest, easiest, and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).
Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go into your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.
Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.
Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.
The Pros for using Zelle:
It is FREE (no processing fees)!
It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)
The Cons for using Zelle:
Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.
It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.
Can I pay by check?
Yes!
If you would like to avoid the 4%processing fees, you may pay by check.
It is very important that you pay in advance of the deadlines and allow ample time for delivery.
Payments received after the deadline could result in cancelation of your reservation or increased fees.
There are two ways to pay by check:
Mail the check
Deposit directly at a local branch
