March 10:
Arrival to
Madrid

7:30pm Welcome Dinner

You'll arrive in Madrid this morning and be met by your driver at the airport to take you to your hotel.

After checking into your hotel, start exploring the city!

Madrid is not as large as it might seem—especially the central districts. Right in the middle of the city lies the Puerta del Sol, a traffic nexus that is the point from which all distances are measured. Also, the house numbering on every street starts at the end nearest the Sol. West and south of the Sol, are the oldest areas of the city, Los Austrias, which contain the royal palace (Palacio Real) and the historic and well-trodden square, Plaza Mayor.

The triangular area to the east and south of the Sol—with the Plaza de Cibeles, Atocha Station and the Sol at its corners—is one of the liveliest districts in Madrid, containing countless bars and restaurants. This is also where the three big museums stand in a row, and beyond them, the largest park in central Madrid, Parque del Buen Retiro.

Directly south of the Sol is Lavapiés: formerly a working class area, but now the most ethnically interesting part of the city thanks to a significant influx of immigrants from Africa and Asia.

North of the Puerta del Sol and the parade avenue of Gran Vía are the Malasaña and Chueca districts. The former is an old residential area that has been cleaned up in the last twenty years, whilst remaining one of the city’s most relaxed bar districts. The latter has also undergone a rebirth: today it is Madrid’s hippest quarter, a centre for a culture of clubbing, restaurants and clothing shops. Originally a gay district, it is now best described as broad-minded.

7:30pm Meet Laura at the hotel Lobby and transfer to restaurant for Dinner

This evening you’ll have reservations at Sibrino de Botin for their famous Suckling Pig.

Menu:

Iberic Ham bites
Cheese
Burgos “Morcilla”

Please note!

Your bus
will have plenty of room for luggage, and it will have electric onboard, but it will NOT have a bathroom on board!

3:00pm Córdoba guided walking tour including its impressive “Mosque”, today a Cathedral, and other sites that will ease our mind and spirit strolling through its narrow winding streets of the Jewish Quarter.

5:30pm Continue towards Seville 2 hours drive.

The Phoenicians arrived in this area first, establishing a number of trade colonies by the river. They taught the locals how to work with iron and created a new way of processing gold.

The Romans came next and founded the town of Hispalis a few hundred years BC. Hispalis grew into a beautiful and prosperous city, but it never managed to emerge from the shadow of nearby Córdoba, until the Visigoths transformed Hispalis into a provincial seat and a centre of learning.

In the 11th century, the Moors captured the city and re-named it Ishbiliya, but they too chose to make the grander city of Córdoba their capital. They even named it the Córdoba Caliphate.

After almost 400 years of civil war battles between Christians and Arabs, the Moors withdrew from their beloved Al-Andalus. Soon after, the inhabitants of Seville finally struck gold.

When Christopher Columbus discovered a new continent in 1492, the exclusive trade rights were given not to Córdoba, but to Seville. The city quickly became the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan city in Europe, and retained that position for several hundred years.

This eclectic mix of influences over the centuries have shaped the city we see today, and Seville's fascinating history is visible at every turn.

Afternoon is for you to keep on discovering this city.

March 18:
Barcelona

8:00pm Farewell dinner

After breakfast you are free to spend the day at leisure in Barcelona.

Like many other cities on the Mediterranean, Barcelona was founded by the Romans. The original settlement, called Barcino, was a small port located on the same spot as today's cathedral. The town was overshadowed by Tarragona, the capital of the province. Both the Visigoths and the Moors invaded Barcelona; however, their influence was not as important to the future of the city as the arrival of the Franks in the late 9th century. It was at that point that Barcelona and Catalonia started shaping their own identity, different from the rest of Spain.

This is most apparent in the language – Spanish, or Castilian, has many Arabic words, while Catalan has many French words instead. So Catalan is not a Spanish dialect, but a language in its own right, related to other Romance languages.

Barcelona's history is seen everywhere in the city. The oldest areas are located by the sea, including the shopping enclave Barri Gotic. On the other side of the main boulevard, La Rambla, lies the legendary Raval district. Until the 1980s this was the slum area, home to the city's own Chinatown (Barrio Chino) and the red light district. Today, designer shops and cafés have moved in. Further north is fashionable Eixample, the area created as a result of the 19th-century expansion of the city.

8:00pm This evening you’ll have reservations at Xerox Ca La Nuri.

F.A.Q.

What time should I arrive in Madrid?

Often times, others in your group are flying from the same airport. You may want to consult with your group to see what flight they are all on so that you can travel with them!

  • We do suggest arriving in Madrid around 2 or 3pm on March 10.

What time is the check in to the hotel?

  • Check in at your hotel will not be until 3pm at the earliest.

    • If you arrive early, or your room is not yet ready for you to check in when you arrive, you may be able to leave your bags with the front desk and they will keep them securely held behind the desk while you go out and eat or explore the city until your room is ready.

Do I have to wear my mask the whole time?

At this time, no.

When you are on your own, please follow all local laws-ask your guide if you are unsure about each city's current COVID19 Mask policy.

How much luggage can I bring on this trip?

Space on the bus allows for 1 piece of luggage per person (regular size, 20kg)

Is breakfast included?

Yes!

The serving times vary by hotel (they will tell you at check-in), but usually breakfast is served starting at 6:30am.

How dressy is too dressy?

You can still dress up if you like!
But you will fit in just as well if you want to do more of a business casual attire instead.

What should I bring on the bus each day?

Snacks and a water bottle.
Since you’ll be on the bus all day (most days), we encourage you to bring some snacks and a water bottle with you to keep up your energy!

Camera
You know we all love seeing your photos of the adventures you have together!

Cash
You’ll be purchasing lunch each day, and possibly purchasing souvenirs along the way.

Is there a bathroom on the bus?

No.

BUT- Spanish law requires the driver to stop and take a break every 2.5 hours.
This will be your best opportunity to take a restroom break.
(If you need more frequent stops, please let your guide or driver know and they will accommodate you as best as possible.)

Will there be electric outlets on the bus?

Usually there are, yes. …. but we cannot guarantee it.

We’ve tried to get a more solid answer for this question, but the bus won’t be officially assigned until just before the start of the tour.
It’s rare not to have electric outlets somewhere on a 55 passenger touring bus; however, it has happened before.

If having a power source is important to you, we recommend bringing a portable power bank with you to charge your devices on the road.

How much should I tip the guide and driver?

They worked hard for you all week- please take care of them appropriately.

Please consider a tip of (at least):
$32/pp for the driver

$56/pp for the guide
(so- that’s a minimum of $88 per person) -(and yes, cash is best)

You can tip at any point in the tour; however, it is customary to tip on the last tour day (before you get off the bus at the hotel in Barcelona.)

It is also customary to tip any other guides that may lead part of your itinerary- $5-8/pp is a nice gesture.

Can I pay by Zelle?

Yes!

We started taking Zelle payments last month and we found this to be a fast and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).

Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go in to your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.

Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.

Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.

The Pros for using Zelle:

  • It is FREE (no processing fees)!

  • It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)

The Cons for using Zelle:

  • Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.

  • It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.

Can I pay by check?

Yes!

If you would like to avoid the 4%processing fees, you may pay by check.
It is very important that you pay in advance of the deadlines and allow ample time for delivery.

You can make checks payable to “Zone Travel”

Please mail your checks (allowing 3-5 business days for delivery - PRIOR to deadline) to:
Zone Travel
PO Box 12052
Columbus, OH 43212

Payments received after the deadline could result in cancelation of your reservation or increased fees.
