What currency is used in Italy, and should I carry cash?

Italy uses the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, shops, and major attractions, but it’s still a good idea to carry a small amount of cash for cafés, small purchases, public restrooms, markets, and tips. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards, and using an ATM connected to a bank is generally preferable to standalone tourist-area currency machines.

What should I wear when visiting churches and religious sites?

Many churches and religious sites, including the Vatican, require visitors to dress respectfully. As a general rule, shoulders and knees should be covered, and hats should be removed when entering churches. During the warmer months, we recommend carrying a lightweight scarf or wrap and avoiding very short shorts or revealing clothing on days that include religious sites.

How much walking should I expect?

Expect a significant amount of walking in all three cities. Rome has uneven cobblestones and sprawling historic areas, Florence is compact but best explored on foot, and Venice requires walking over bridges and along narrow streets, often with stairs. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are one of the most important things you can pack. Even with private transportation and transfers, vehicles cannot always reach the entrance of hotels, restaurants, or attractions in historic pedestrian areas.

Is the tap water safe to drink?

Yes, tap water is generally safe to drink throughout Italy. Rome is especially famous for its public drinking fountains, known as nasoni, where you can refill a water bottle while exploring the city. Bringing a reusable water bottle is a great idea, particularly during the warmer months.

How does tipping work in Italy?

Tipping is appreciated but is not expected at the same level as it is in the United States. Restaurants may include a coperto, or cover charge, but this is not technically a tip. For good service, rounding up the bill or leaving approximately 5–10% is appreciated. Tipping private guides and drivers is customary for excellent service, with the amount based on the length and quality of the experience.

Do I need to validate train tickets in Italy?

It depends on the type of train and ticket. Reserved high-speed train tickets for routes such as Rome–Florence or Florence–Venice generally do not need to be validated because they are tied to a specific train, date, and departure time. Some regional and local train tickets may require validation or check-in, depending on how the ticket was purchased. Always follow the instructions provided with your specific ticket.

What should I know about Venice transportation?

Venice is completely different from Rome and Florence because the historic city center has no cars. Transportation is by foot or by boat, including public vaporetto water buses, private water taxis, and gondolas. Pack accordingly: bridges, stairs, and uneven surfaces are part of daily life in Venice, and oversized or very heavy luggage can be difficult to manage. Private water taxis are convenient but can still require some walking between the dock and your hotel.

Do I need reservations for major attractions?

Yes. Many of Italy’s most popular attractions use timed-entry reservations, including the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Uffizi Gallery, Accademia Gallery, and other major sites. During busy travel periods, availability can sell out well in advance. Guests should follow their confirmed itinerary carefully and arrive at the designated meeting point on time, as late arrivals may not be accommodated.

What kind of electrical adapter do I need?

Italy uses Type C, F, and L outlets and operates on 230V electricity. Most modern phones, laptops, tablets, and camera chargers are dual-voltage and only require a plug adapter. Hair dryers, curling irons, and other high-powered appliances may require a voltage converter unless they are specifically marked as dual-voltage. Check the label on the device before plugging it in.

What is the best way to avoid pickpockets?

Rome, Florence, and Venice are generally welcoming destinations, but pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist areas and on public transportation. Keep phones and wallets out of back pockets, use a secure crossbody or zippered bag, and stay especially aware in train stations, on crowded buses and metros, and near major attractions. Avoid placing phones or wallets on café tables where they can be easily grabbed.

Why is bread placed on the table at restaurants, and is it free?

Not always.
Some restaurants in Italy may bring bread, snacks, or small appetizers to the table when you are seated, but you should not assume that these items are complimentary. If you do not want them, politely ask your server to remove them from the table. If you keep the food and eat any of it, you may be charged for it on your bill.

This is different from the coperto (cover charge).
Many restaurants charge a small coperto, or cover charge, per person, which may include bread and table service. This charge should be listed on the menu and is separate from a tip.

Fun Note: Unlike in the United States, bread is generally not intended to be eaten with olive oil and balsamic vinegar before the meal. Italians typically use bread alongside the meal or for fare la scarpetta—using a piece of bread to enjoy the remaining sauce on the plate.

What is the weather like in Italy in July?

July is one of the hottest months of the year in Italy. Expect hot, sunny days and warm evenings, with Rome and Florence often reaching the upper 80s and 90s°F and potentially higher during a heat wave. Venice is typically a little cooler, with average July highs around 82°F, but humidity can make it feel warmer.

Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. A reusable water bottle is highly recommended. It is also important to remember that many churches require shoulders and knees to be covered, so lightweight layers are useful even during hot weather. When possible, take advantage of early mornings and evenings for outdoor exploration and plan for breaks during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Are there new rules for visiting the Trevi Fountain?

Yes. As of February 2026, tourists and non-residents must pay a €2 fee to access the lower area closest to the Trevi Fountain basin. The surrounding piazza remains free, so you can still see and photograph the fountain without paying; the fee is specifically for entering the controlled area down near the water. The traditional coin toss is still allowed from the designated area.

Can I sit on the Spanish Steps?

No. Sitting on the Spanish Steps is prohibited, and local authorities can issue fines for doing so. Visitors are welcome to walk up and down the staircase and enjoy the surrounding Piazza di Spagna, but should not sit, eat, or drink on the steps. This rule is intended to protect the historic monument and manage the large crowds that gather in the area.

Can I swim in or put my feet into the fountains?

No. It is prohibited to swim, wade, or put your feet into Rome’s historic fountains—including the Trevi Fountain. This can result in significant fines. Rome has many public drinking fountains, known as nasoni, that provide free drinking water, but the city’s decorative and historic fountains should be admired without entering or touching the water.

Why is my restaurant bill different from what I’m used to in the United States?

Dining in Italy works a little differently. You may see a coperto, or cover charge, listed on the bill for each person. This is normal and is not a tip. Water is also generally not complimentary—you will usually be asked whether you prefer naturale (still) or frizzante (sparkling) bottled water.

Meals also tend to move at a slower pace. Servers generally will not bring the check until you ask for it by saying “Il conto, per favore.” This is not poor service; allowing guests to enjoy the table without being rushed is part of Italian dining culture.

Can I order a cappuccino after lunch or dinner?

You certainly can, but Italians traditionally drink cappuccino and other milk-heavy coffee drinks in the morning, often with breakfast. After lunch or dinner, an espresso or caffè is much more typical. No one is going to stop you from ordering a cappuccino in the afternoon, but if you want to follow local customs, save it for breakfast and order an espresso after your meal.

Is air conditioning common in Italy?

Yes, but it may not feel as powerful as air conditioning in the United States. Hotels, restaurants, museums, and shops often have air conditioning, but temperatures may be kept warmer than American travelers are accustomed to. Historic buildings can also take longer to cool, and some hotels use energy-saving systems that turn off the air conditioning when guests leave the room.

We wouldn’t … Tap water quality varies depending on where you are staying in Crete. In many areas it is technically safe to drink, but bottled water is commonly recommended because of the mineral content and taste. Bottled water is inexpensive and widely available. When in doubt, ask your hotel or local guide about the water in the specific area where you are staying.

What is the weather like in Crete in July?

July is typically hot, sunny, and very dry, with daytime temperatures commonly reaching the upper 80s and low 90s°F, although hotter periods are possible. Coastal breezes can make temperatures feel more comfortable, particularly in the evenings, while inland areas and archaeological sites can feel considerably hotter during the middle of the day.

Why did the restaurant bring food that we didn’t order?

If you are unsure whether something is complimentary, simply ask your server. At many traditional Cretan tavernas, a small dessert, fruit, or raki offered at the end of the meal is genuinely complimentary and is part of the island’s culture of hospitality.

What is raki, and do I have to drink it?

Raki, also called tsikoudia in Crete, is a strong clear spirit traditionally made from grape pomace after winemaking. It is deeply connected to Cretan hospitality and may be offered after a meal or when visiting a local home or business.

You are not required to drink it. A polite thank-you is perfectly acceptable if you prefer not to drink alcohol. If you do try it, sip carefully—it is stronger than it looks!

How much walking should I expect in Crete?

Even when traveling by private vehicle, expect some walking. Archaeological sites such as Knossos, traditional villages, monasteries, caves, and historic towns can have uneven stone surfaces, hills, stairs, and limited shade.

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are strongly recommended. For tours involving caves or mountain terrain, sandals and flip-flops are generally not appropriate.

What should I know about driving and travel times in Crete?

Crete is much larger than many visitors expect. The island stretches approximately 160 miles from east to west, and mountainous terrain means travel times can be longer than distances on a map might suggest.

Roads in rural and mountainous areas can be narrow and winding, and traffic or summer crowds can affect travel times. For this reason, return times from private touring days should be considered estimates rather than guarantees.

Is Crete safe?

Crete is generally considered a very safe destination for travelers, and the island is known for its welcoming hospitality. As in any destination, use normal precautions with valuables in crowded tourist areas and do not leave phones, wallets, or bags unattended.

The greater day-to-day concerns for most summer visitors are heat, sun exposure, dehydration, and uneven walking surfaces, rather than crime.

What are meal times like in Crete?

Meals in Crete are generally relaxed and social. Lunch may take place later than many Americans are accustomed to, and dinner often begins around 8:00 or 9:00 PM, with locals frequently dining even later.

Service is usually unhurried. Servers generally will not rush you or immediately bring the check when you finish eating. When you are ready to leave, simply ask for the bill.

What foods should I try while in Crete?

Cretan cuisine is one of the highlights of visiting the island. Look for dakos (barley rusk topped with tomato and local cheese), kalitsounia (small cheese or herb pies), local cheeses such as graviera, wild greens, grilled lamb or goat, fresh seafood, local honey, olive oil, and dishes featuring seasonal vegetables and herbs.

One of the best ways to experience Cretan food is to order several dishes for the table and share them rather than having everyone order a separate entrée. This is common in traditional tavernas and gives you the opportunity to try more of the local cuisine.

What are the water temps in greece in July?

In July, the water temperatures in Greece are warm and perfect for swimming. On average, the sea temperature ranges from 75°F (24°C) to 83°F (28°C), depending on the location. This makes it ideal for enjoying the beaches, snorkeling, and other water activities during the summer months

The plumbing systems in Greece are not designed to handle paper waste, as the pipes are much narrower than those in other countries. Flushing toilet paper can cause blockages and plumbing issues.

What should I do with toilet paper instead?

Use the small waste bin provided in the bathroom. These bins are emptied regularly, and this practice is common and widely accepted throughout Greece.

We started taking Zelle payments last month and we found this to be a fast and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).

Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go in to your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.

Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.

Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.

The Pros for using Zelle:

• It is FREE (no processing fees)!

• It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)

The Cons for using Zelle:

• Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.

• It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.
